AI as a meeting note taker

I’ve tried out this tool called Spacebar today. The idea behind it is that it records your meeting (be it an interview, lecture, standup etc.) and then provides a summary about it.

I’ve used it during our weekly planning meeting to see how good would it perform in summarizing that meeting and providing key takeaways (or event tasks) from it.

My thoughts about using the tool:

  • I really like the Conversational Facts design resembling the Nutritious Facts label. It failed to get some facts right though – it basically says only one person participated which is not correct.
  • It seems to focus mostly on the first part of the conversation, which was just a chit chat.
  • It generated a cover image based on this first part of the conversation.
  • It did not-bad job at writing a detailed summary of the meeting.
  • When I asked it to give me my most important tasks based on the meeting, it failed tremendously. It hallucinated by giving me some task out of the blue. And here again it failed to recognize that there were multiple people in the meeting.

Overall, I feel like it lacks context to provide really good insights about the meeting.

Which brings me to the product vs feature concept. This app would strive as a feature of a different tool, rather than a standalone product. Because as a feature it would also have an additional context of participants and maybe even some additional files or task list / board.

But I’ve only tested it in the context of team planning. I feel it might be really useful for recording lectures and then assisting in learning the material. If it doesn’t hallucinate that is.
